Hope Has Many Faces
Terry Pottinger

Hope doesn’t always arrive with certainty.
More often, it comes quietly, without announcement, asking only that we take one more step.

For much of my life, I believed Hope was something to hold onto, something waiting just beyond reach, on the other side of resolution. I thought it would feel bright and decisive, like a clear answer or a promise fulfilled.

But Hope, as it turns out, is far more subtle than that. I began to notice it in ordinary moments. On walks where the path curved out of sight and I couldn’t see where it led, yet my feet kept moving.
In mornings when grief or uncertainty lingered, I still got up, made the coffee, opened the curtains, and breathed.

In seasons when answers did not come, but presence did, Hope showed up not as assurance, but as willingness. A willingness to stay and listen.
To trust that something meaningful was unfolding, even when I couldn’t yet name it.

There were times when hope felt fragile, almost invisible. And yet, it was steady. It didn’t rush me forward or pull me out of what was difficult. Instead, Hope walked beside me, quietly reminding me that this moment belonged to the journey.

I’ve learned that hope doesn’t demand optimism.
It doesn’t require us to feel positive or strong.
Hope simply asks that we do not abandon ourselves.

Sometimes Hope is the light filtering through trees after a long night of rain.

Sometimes it’s in the sound of birds returning after silence.

Sometimes it’s in a breath taken when none seemed available.

Hope lives in the small decision to keep going, not because we are certain where we are headed, but because we are still here.

As you read, you may recognize hope in your own life differently than I have. That is as it should be. Hope meets us where we are, not where we think we should be.

Hope has many faces.

Sometimes it is quiet trust.

Sometimes it is a choice made one day at a time.

Sometimes, Hope is courage. Not the kind that eliminates fear, but the kind that walks alongside it…open, honest, and willing to learn.

Hope does not promise outcomes.
It offers companionship.

Hope does not ask you to be fearless, certain, or strong. It asks only that you stay present.

Hope will meet you there.

Thought to Ponder:

Where might Hope already be walking beside you, asking only that you take one more step?
